February 1970 – a song popular in this month – Fire & Rain by James Taylor

Taylor wrote this in 1968 at three different times. He started it in London, where he auditioned for The Beatles’ Apple Records. He later worked on it in a Manhattan Hospital, and finished it while in drug rehab at The Austin Riggs Center in Massachusetts.

This song is about the high and low points of Taylor’s life. He was only 20 when he wrote it in 1968, but was battling depression and drug addiction.

This was the song that took Taylor from little-known troubadour to star of the ’70s singer-songwriter movement.

A five-time Grammy Award winner, Taylor was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000.

After a 45-year wait, James earned his first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart with Before This World. The album, which was released on June 16 through Concord Records, arrived atop the chart dated July 4, 2015 — more than 45 years after Taylor arrived on the list with Sweet Baby James (on the March 14, 1970 list).

  1. Oh my spear!!! OK I have written this into so many stories, then erased! I will write it! It was the first song ever I had to sing, almost failed 7th grade music!! I refused until the last day to sing!!! Wow this brings tears to my eyes!! Thanks!
