Opposite

Opposite

merriam-webster.com has this definition –

Simple Definition of opposite

1:  located at the other end, side, or corner of something: located across from something

2:  completely different

enchantedlearning.com has the following information –

Opposites are also called antonyms. Some common opposites are:

absent – present,            alive – dead,      backward – forward,      begin – end,

create – destroy,             dark – light

dead – alive,      end – begin, start,            fail – succeed,

float – sink,         fresh – stale,      full – empty,      hard – easy

limited – boundless,       loss – win,           mad – happy, sane,         maximum – minimum, new – old,           no – yes

optimist – pessimist,      past – present,

patient – impatient,

possible – impossible,    stop – go,

strong – weak,  success – failure,              victory – defeat

They say opposites attract – is this true?

psychologytoday.com article ‘The Real Reason That Opposites Attract’ begins with the following –

Did you ever think that it was a cruel joke of nature that most of us find ourselves attracted to people very much unlike us? I mean, wouldn’t it be an awful lot simpler and a lot less messy if we tended to be drawn to those whose personalities are more like our own rather than those who seem like they are polar opposites of us.

The article continues with the following –

We are drawn to others out of needs and desires that are unfulfilled in our lives, such as a desire to experience greater connection, security, love, support, and comfort. On the other hand some of those unfulfilled longings have to do with their polar opposites, such as adventure, freedom, risk, challenge, and intensity. While these needs and desires may appear to be mutually exclusive, they not only can co-exist with each other, but in the process, generate a “tension of the opposites” that produces the passion that sustains, deepens and enlivens relationships.

It continues with the following –

Opposites, or perhaps more accurately, “complements” do attract. Introverts and extroverts, morning people and night people, impulsives and planners, steady plodders and adrenaline junkies, adventure-grabbers and security-seekers…there’s no denying the idea that something in us is drawn to people who counter some of our dominant inclinations with complementary tendencies.

Gary and I are not total opposites, we certainly have our differences and we have our similarities.  If I had to pick and choose a few words from the above list, this is where the words would fall.

Terry                     Gary

Absent                 Present

Forward               Backward (he would disagree)

Destroy                Create

Dark                       Light

Fresh                     Stale (he would again disagree)

Limited                 Boundless

Mad                       Sane

Pessimist             Optimist (more so than me)

Impatient            Patient

Impossible          Possible

No                          Yes

Okay, upon viewing this list do you see who is the positive person in this relationship; the nice and pleasant person?  Do we have conflict?  Absolutely, but ultimately we balance each other out.

We balance each other out when it comes to other areas of our relationship as well.  He is a numbers guy – me not so much so.  I am the tech guy – him definitely not.

We have our differences and we have our similarities – ultimately we have each other.

Meet my Husband

In my post ‘spearfruit’, I wrote the following –

In 5 days, I will be publishing a post to introduce my husband to you.  The name spearfruit was created by me and relates to him.  I have a pet name for him, no it is not spearfruit; but spearfruit is the name that came from his pet name.

Here are some hints – see if in the next 5 days you can figure it out:

Breakdown my blog name into 2 words

Find the meaning or history or definition of 1 of those words

For the other word, find the surname that is associated to it

Once you have figured this out, you have found the pet name for my husband.  If you are unable to figure it out – that’s okay, I will reveal it to you in 5 days.

Good luck my friends!

In today’s post, I write the following –

In my ‘to expose me’ series, I slowly identified myself to you.  There were the hands, the feet, the wrinkles, the hair, the body, the location, the voice and yesterday I exposed all of me.

Today I want you to meet my husband.

Were you able to figure out his pet name or maybe his first name?  My husband’s name is Gary and I call him garyberry!

behindthename.com has the following meaning and history about the name Gary

From an English surname which was derived from a Norman given name, which was itself originally a short form of names beginning with the Germanic element ger meaning “spear”.

Wikipedia.org has the following definition about the word Berry

In everyday language, a berry is a small, pulpy and often edible fruit.

So you see, my blog is named after my husband; Gary – garyberry – spearfruit.

Besides being a wonderful, patient and kind man – he puts up with me – no one else would.

Here are some interesting facts about Gary –

Exposing Me – it is me

I wrote in my post ‘to expose me‘, the following –

Now over 8 months later I have realized fellow bloggers are supportive of me and have welcomed me with open arms and appreciate my writings.  Because of this I decided to expose myself, my identity, to you my fellow bloggers.  But a course I am not doing it all in one post, I still have 3 months to write a post a day.

So I will write a series of posts to expose me – my identity to you and the blogger world.

It Is Me – Terry

The Treasure Coast

In my post ‘Realtor, Trip, Sale‘, I wrote the following –

The additional garage sales took place the past 2 weekends and many items were sold and others are now being donated.  This coming Monday, we leave for another trip to the next location that we will call home.  Unlike the past trips last year, this one we will fly and not drive.  This trip to our selected new location will be to search for resale homes and/or communities to possibly build a new home.

In today’s post, I write the following –

We are leaving today for that next trip.  As you may know by now, I currently live in Dallas, Texas and today we are taking a trip to Florida, landing in Orlando.

But Orlando is not our final stop; after an overnight stay with family, we will drive to the Treasure Coast to a small city that is known as Vero Beach.

Per Wikipedia.org –

Vero Beach is a city in Indian River County, Florida, in the United States. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2010 data, the city had a population of 15,220.

The beaches in Vero Beach are part of Florida’s Treasure Coast.

The Indian River Lagoon, passing through Vero Beach, forms a significant portion of the Intracoastal Waterway, and is a hub for boating, fishing, water skiing, diving, kayaking and other small-craft waterborne activities.

Our past 6 years of travel led us to Vero Beach, a small town compared to our current big city.  We are ready; ready to start a new chapter, a new life in a way that will be different from the current one.  We picked Vero Beach as our new home for several reasons.

Image2

Image Provided By: http://www.choicepest.com

Vero Beach is a small city; we are looking forward to slower pace with less traffic and nice people.  The major traffic will be limited to the nearby Interstate 95.

Vero Beach is near several cruise ports; we are looking to travel more including taking cruises.  Living close to cruise ports in Cape Canaveral, Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Tampa will provide us many opportunities.

Vero Beach is near several VA hospitals; my husband is a veteran and for the past 13+ years has used the VA for his medical needs.  He will have the option to use the VA hospital in Orlando or West Palm Beach for his medical needs which are both within reasonable driving distance.

Vero Beach is near major airports: for traveling purposes, we are within reasonable driving distance to major airports including Orlando, Melbourne, West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Tampa.

Vero Beach is near military bases: our plans for travel include flying charter flights with military personnel and with several military bases located in Florida we can plan to hop on a military charter and take off to many parts of the world.

Vero Beach has its own beach and a course there are many more beaches in Florida.  We like the beach and plan to spend time there as often as we can.

The next 6 days we will be in Florida.  I will continue to post every day but most likely will be late on responding to comments and reading your posts.

Happy & Sunny day to you all!

December 1970 – The Tears of a Clown by Smokey Robinson

December 1970 – a song popular in this month – The Tears of a Clown by Smokey Robinson

Smokey Robinson based this song on the Italian opera Pagliacci, which is about a clown who must make the audience laugh while he weeps behind his makeup because his wife betrayed him.

Interesting facts about The Tears of a Clown & Smokey Robinson  –

Stevie Wonder came up with the music for this song with a top Motown producer named Hank Cosby. They recorded an instrumental demo and asked Robinson to complete the song – it was common practice for Motown writers to work on each other’s songs at the time.

With his group The Miracles, Robinson had a big hit in 1965 with “The Tracks Of My Tears,” and the tears theme led many listeners to believe that this was a sequel. Robinson said he didn’t notice any similarity until it was pointed out to him, but noted that the songs both deal with “contradictions of desire.”

The lyrics, “Just like Pagliacci did, I try to keep my sadness hid” are also in the 1964 song called “My Smile Is Just A Frown (Turned Upside Down)” written partly by Smokey Robinson, sung by a Motown artist named Carolyn Crawford. The song has similar meaning.

In the UK, this song was re-released in 1976, going to #34. In 1979, a cover version by The Beat (known as “The English Beat” in America), made #6 UK.

Spring Cleaning

A week ago today was the first day of spring – well for me anyway.

almanac.com has the following –

Astronomically speaking, the spring equinox falls on March 19 or March 20, 2016. Here are all the Equinox times for North American time zones this year:

  • Saturday, March 19, 2016 at 9:30 PM PDT
  • Saturday, March 19, 2016 at 10:30 PM MDT
  • Saturday, March 19, 2016 at 11:30 PM CDT
  • Sunday, March 20, 2016 at 12:30 AM EDT

Did you know this is the earliest spring of our lives thus far?

Wikipedia.org has the following about spring cleaning –

Spring cleaning is the practice of thoroughly cleaning a house in the springtime. The practice of spring cleaning is especially prevalent in climates with a cold winter.

The term is also used metaphorically for any kind of heavy duty cleaning or organizing enterprise. A person who gets their affairs in order before an audit or inspection could be said to be doing some spring cleaning.

Are you doing any spring cleaning?

I am!

The home front has been in cleaning mode for many months now.  With the downsizing and the house going on the market to sale in less than a month, much cleaning has taken place.  There are closets that are totally empty and freshly painted; some touchup painting has taken place throughout the home, decluttering has taken place and detailed cleaning of inside and outside is currently in progress.

I decided I needed to do some spring cleaning on my blog site.  When I started my blog almost a year ago, I was not familiar with the usage of categories and I created more then I really needed to.  Me being the detailed organized person I am, I do have a word document and excel spread sheet that has all my past, current and future posts neatly associated to a topic related to me and my life.  My topics did not correspond with my blog site categories – until today.

Image2

Image Provided by: nedlandsrugby.com.au

The past several weeks I organized my past posts and related them to a specific topic which now corresponds with the same category.  I then updated every single post with the new corresponding category.  I wanted to do this to make it easier for a reader to find a past post that corresponds with other posts.  If you are a new reader to my blog, the updated categories should help in finding related posts.  Hopefully I achieved this.  My new categories are ‘Attitudes, Feelings and Views’, ‘Meditation’, ‘My 70’s Music Collection’, ‘Past Events’, ‘Family Members’, ‘Thoughts From Years Past’, ‘Activities Occurring Today’, ‘Characteristics Of Me’, ‘Life Moving Forward’ and ‘Awards & Quote Challenge’.   You should be able to click a category from the above menu and now see the related posts.

Did you also notice a made a change to my blog site?  I wanted to update colors, background and fonts to liven it up a little as in the coming months I plan to change the focus of my blog.  More details on this change coming in the near future.

I hope you like the update – let me know your thoughts.  Oh, and happy spring!

spearfruit

Who is spearfruit?  Or maybe the question is what is spearfruit?

It is kind of an odd name for a blog, don’t you think?  It makes perfect sense to me; well that is because I thought of it – I came up with the name.

So to answer the above questions; you know who spearfruit is – it is me – it is Terry.  But what about the question; what is spearfruit?

Here is my thinking when it came to my blog name ‘spearfruit’.  Prior to retiring I worked for many years in the Information Technology industry.  Some of those people are kind of nerdy and think very much outside the box – you have to – to be creative.  Our society gives no second thought to the names ‘Google’, ‘Apple’, ‘Android’, ‘Adobe’, ‘Yahoo’, ‘Amazon’, ‘Yelp’ and the list goes on.  Our society gives no second thought to the names ‘Atari’, ‘Coca Cola’, ‘Dr. Pepper’, ‘Sega’, ‘Sprint’, ‘Starbucks’, and the list goes on.  Information Technology apps, software, everything that runs on computers and smartphones and many other devices have to be upgraded with fixes and improvements. These upgrades for some companies will have names associated to them.  If you have an Android device, your latest release of that operating system is either ‘Lollipop’ or ‘Marshmallow’.  The latest Apple operating system upgrade is ‘El Capitan’.

These names may sound odd to most people, but not to me.  So, spearfruit is not odd to me either.

Realtor, Trip, Sale

In my post ‘The ball is rolling’, I wrote the following –

As you know, several garage sales took place last year and additional ones are on the calendar for March.  With downsizing from a 3,800 sq. ft. home to a smaller one comes downsizing furniture and possessions.

In my post today, I write the following –

The additional garage sales took place the past 2 weekends and many items were sold and others are now being donated.

This coming Monday, we leave for another trip to the next location that we will call home.  Unlike the past trips last year, this one we will fly and not drive.  This trip to our selected new location will be to search for resale homes and/or communities to possibly build a new home.  We most likely will not buy on this visit, but if we come across a property we feel is a perfect fit, then an offer could be made.  This trip’s main focus is to provide us a better idea of what is available that would best meet our criteria.  Our plan for now is to either buy a property once the current one is sold; whether a resale or new construction or to start the process of building a new home or we may decide ultimately to rent for a while until that next home is found.

The decluttering of the current home has taken place as well as minor maintenance projects, newly painted closets; with the garden and landscaping preparations for spring to be completed once we return from this next trip.  Now the whirlwind of activities will begin.

Image2

Image Provided by: graybit.com

This past Tuesday we met with our realtor to discuss details on listing our home next month.  Once we return from our trip, pictures will be taken of the house and the process to list it on the market will take place.  Once these pictures are taken, then additional selling of processions will take place as we continue to downsize.   At this point we are unsure as to how many possessions we will be taking with us – this decision will be determined with this next trip as we continue to explore our possibilities.

The goal at this time is to list the current property on April 15.  The market here in Dallas is great and we anticipate the property will sell quickly.  Once we have an offer, a decision will be made to sell the rest of our possessions or to move what possessions we still have to the new location.

Yes, at this moment there are some questions that still need answers and determinations to be made.  The trip next week will help in resolving these and a clearer course of action will be available.

HS Memories – the future

In my post ‘The ball is rolling’, I wrote the following –

As you know, several garage sales took place last year and additional ones are on the calendar for March.  With downsizing from a 3,800 sq. ft. home to a smaller one comes downsizing furniture and possessions.

In today’s post I write the following –

Part of the downsizing taking place is opening boxes in our upstairs storage and going through possessions of long ago.  Some of these possessions I have not viewed in many, many years.  Some items will need to be discarded, as they hold no value as a keepsake.  Other items will be kept a little longer until another day arrives that I will need to find a home for them, whether that be giving to my sons or the trash.  I realize it is difficult to just throw items and memories of long ago away, but not everything can be kept forever.

Image1

Image Provided by: http://www.flickr.com

One item I came across was a book titled ‘memories’, I received specially for my high school senior year to record ideas, impressions, opinions, thoughts and comments.  This book includes personal data; including my senior picture, high school data, senior class data, class schedule, faculty information, clubs – activities – organizations; you get the idea.

I graduated high school in 1979 at the age of 19.  I married my high school sweetheart at age 18, therefore I was married my senior year of high school.

One of the pages in this ‘memories’ book is titled ‘the future’; I want to share with you what I wrote my senior year about what I thought my future would be.

After I graduate I plan to go to night school and take Real Estate courses that I need to sell real estate.  That summer I am also going to work in the day time for my father until I receive my real estate license.  Once I received my license I will be working for my father at his real estate agency.  After I have worked there for about a year my wife and I are going to have a child and start a family and will probably make real estate my career.  I want to have three kids and I have plans for a big house and hope someday that this dream will come true.  In a couple of years I will buy a new car, a Lincoln Continental; yellow and brown with a T-top and every extra thing I can get on it.  Hopefully this dream will come true also.

I laugh when I read what I wrote back in 1979 as most of this never came to be.

Image3

Image Provided by: http://www.flickr.com

I do have my three kids and I do have a big house, but the kids never grew up in the big house and I never had that Lincoln Continental, but instead a pickup truck.  I never received a real estate license and instead worked for many years in the IT industry.

The future I envisioned would soon be replaced with a major depression, attempted suicides and divorce.

to expose me – my voice

I wrote in my post ‘to expose me‘, the following –

Now over 8 months later I have realized fellow bloggers are supportive of me and have welcomed me with open arms and appreciate my writings.  Because of this I decided to expose myself, my identity, to you my fellow bloggers.  But a course I am not doing it all in one post, I still have 3 months to write a post a day.

So I will write a series of posts to expose me – my identity to you and the blogger world.

In today’s post I write the following –

In past years I have documented my thoughts at different times throughout my life by writing them down and by voice recording.  For no particular reason, I usually did not continue the documentation; but these documented thoughts are fragments of my life, that are being brought together here on my blog.  Back in 2009, I made a voice recording where I speak about where I am in my life at that time.  I have a need to write a book, to write about my life, my struggles from years ago and those that continue to exist today.

Here is an excerpt from that voice recording from 2009, several months after my 49th birthday.  This voice recording is part of my ‘to expose me’ series; this is me – my voice –
