Thimblerig

This past Monday, I had surgery.  Prior to the surgery, when I scheduled my posts for this week, I had no idea how my recovery would be going.  I felt I would need all week for some recovery before I would post about my status.  My plan is to update you on how I am feeling and the status of my recovery in the next few days.

For today,

My category ‘Pictures & Stories’ are posts with me writing a fictional, creative short story about a picture.

thimblerig

Thimblerig –

The day had come for the big Thimblerig tournament and the participants were prepared for most anything.  The peas, small balls, shells, cups and bottle caps were brought with excitement as the contestants eagerly awaited their turn.  There was that one that always has something different and to the amazement of the other participants and audience, that something different would surprise them all.

That something different had them laying down their money for a return in profit to retire them all.

It was that one’s turn and the time had arrived that no one saw coming.

There was no sleight of hand or psychological tricks; only skill, mastery and a large crane.

The game ended and the swindle was cracked open wide with the “Sharp” moving quickly on to find new “Flats”.

The profit was no more and the crowd was stunned.

I will be in ICU for a couple of days and then the recovery begins.

I appreciate everyone taking the time to stop by, read and leave many wonderful comments.  Due to my surgery and not knowing how I will be feeling; I am disabling the comments on my post today.  I need a few days of recovery and to grow accustom to the new me.  But know soon I will have comments enabled and I will be ready to respond to each one of them.

For today,

Thank God It’s Friday

Back in 1978, there was a movie release ‘Thank God It’s Friday’.

Lots of good music and booging taking place in this movie.

As you know I have published a few Boogie Blogging posts and will again this year.

Until my next Boogie Blogging post, enjoy the video.

I will be in ICU for a couple of days and then the recovery begins.

Recovery has started

3 days ago, I had surgery – 3 days ago, I had a Radical Cystectomy – 3 days ago, I had parts removed from my body.

Per webmd.com –

Radical cystectomy is the removal of the entire bladder, nearby lymph nodes (lymphadenectomy), part of the urethra, and nearby organs that may contain cancer cells. In men, the prostate, the seminal vesicles, and part of the vas deferens are also removed.

I am not a good patient and I hate hospitals; I am doing my best and the recovery has started.

As I spend time in the hospital I remind myself the pain will pass and although I am missing parts, I am still me.

Life today may not be wonderful and full of rainbows, but it will be again soon.

This song by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole is a favorite of mine, it warms my heart and brings a smile to me.

Cruising

It is 2 days after surgery and I am recovering.  Because past experience has proven I am not the greatest hospital patient, I decided to post some photos taken on our recent cruise last month because they bring a smile to my face.

It is the day after surgery and I am recovering.   Because past experience has proven I am not the greatest hospital patient, I decided to post some funnies today.

the day my life changes

Today is the day, the major surgery takes place and the day my life changes.

I will remain grateful as there are others in the world who have much less than me – who have nothing compared to me.

But my body will change and I will change and my life will change.

Today is the day, the major surgery takes place and the day my life changes.

I will remain humble as there are others in this world who are experiencing much more than me – much worse than me.

But my body will change and I will change and my life will change.

Today is the day, the major surgery takes place and the day my life changes.

I will remain appreciative as there are others in this world who have no others to support them – who have no one there for them.

But my body will change and I will change and my life will change.

Today is the day, the major surgery takes place and the day my life changes.

I will remain hopeful as there are others who have less to look forward to – who have nothing positive in their future.

But my body will change and I will change and my life will change.

My hotchpotch

In my post ‘the next 9 days‘ I wrote the following –

Most of my posts for the next 9 days are about events of the past several weeks, about my current feelings and about my future after surgery.

In today’s post, I write the following –

9 days counting; I feel you are tired of reading posts about this upcoming surgery and my feelings and emotions.  But I had to get it out of my head and onto paper before tomorrow.

So, today I am wrapping-up different topics into one post – my hotchpotch.

Reminders –

Because I have a personal goal to post every day, next week is no exception.  Next week’s posts are all scheduled and ready to publish; expect a lighter week with regards to subject and topic.  Starting tomorrow, my posts will have the comments disabled.  My hope is that I will be back ready to respond to your wonderful comments next Saturday – time will tell.

Hotchpotch #2 –

Tomorrow is surgery day.

Tomorrow is not just an important day for me, it is for others as well.

Tomorrow, Monday January 16, 2017 is significant for the following reasons –

A Federal Holiday –

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a federal holiday in the United States honoring the achievements of Martin Luther King, Jr. – the chief spokesman for nonviolent activism in the civil rights movement to end racial segregation. It is observed on the third Monday of January each year, which is close to January 15, the King’s birthday.

RV Friend Surgery –

While temporary living on the Naval Air Station Pensacola RV park, Gary and I have met many wonderful people we now consider friends.  One of these friends is having surgery tomorrow as well and at the same hospital as me.  Who knows, maybe our paths will cross in the surgery prep room.

Stepmom’s Birthday –

For no particular reason; I do not believe I have ever mentioned my stepmom here on my blog.  She is very important to my dad and very important to me.  My stepmom is much younger than my dad and not too much older than me.  My dad and stepmom are married for over 30 years now and tomorrow is her birthday.  My stepmom is 18 years younger than my dad and 9 years older than me.  My stepmom celebrates her 65th birthday tomorrow.

Hotchpotch #3 –

I wanted to publish another post before tomorrow of the importance of my caregiver Gary.  I ran out of time and days and his post will wait for a few weeks.  Let’s just say, in the coming months, I will need him more than ever – and it is comforting to know, he will be here for me.  I am fortunate, lucky, blessed to have Gary in my life.

Hotchpotch #4 –

I am fortunate, very fortunate in my life – a life filled with joy, sadness, certainties and unknowns.  I consider myself lucky: I do believe I have much more to look forward to – many years to come of travels, making friends, visiting family, celebrating, uncovering, and most importantly living.

Big Day Monday

For over a year now, a long road has been taken to bring me to this point in my life.

A few words before the day –

Big Day Monday

(Note: my reference to the weather in Florida does not pertain to the whole state because a large portion is sunny and warm this time of year.  I am currently located in Pensacola, Florida and yes, it certainly does become cold here this time of the year)

Unlucky Coincidence?

Today is the 20th month of my blog!  My anniversary post is something different than the usual posts I write.

Today is Friday the 13th – are you superstitious?

Since I started my blog 20 months ago, there have been 2 previous Friday the 13ths with today making it 3.

These dates are –

Friday, November 13, 2015

Friday, May 13, 2016

Friday, January 13, 2017

Since I was born 56 years ago, there have been 97 previous Friday the 13ths with today making it 98.

I will not list all the dates here – you will just need to trust me on this.

From nationalgeographic.com article Superstitious Numbers Around the World

Today is Friday the 13th—a day thought to be unlucky because of the idea that number 12 is “complete” (think apostles, months of the year, zodiac signs) and 13 is just … odd. That’s the explanation given by Joe Nickell, a senior research fellow and paranormal investigator for Skeptical Inquirer magazine.

But in other countries, different numbers are thought to be just as unlucky. In case 13 makes you nervous, here are five other numbers to avoid.

4: In China, the pronunciation of the word for the number four is similar to that of the Chinese word for death. Many buildings in China skip a fourth floor, just as U.S. builders sometimes omit floor 13.

9: Just as the number four has a bad-luck soundalike in Chinese, 9 is feared in Japan because it sounds similar to the Japanese word for torture or suffering.

17: Some Italians are superstitious about Friday the 17th because rearranging the Roman numeral XVII can create the word “VIXI”—translated from Latin to mean “my life is over.”

39: The number 39 gets a bad rap in Afghanistan. An NPR report explains: “Many Afghans say that the number 39 translates into morda-gow, which literally means ‘dead cow’ but is also a well-known slang term for a procurer of prostitutes—a pimp.” So when Afghans see a car with number 39 on the license plate, they head the other way.

Add the unlucky numbers 4 + 9 + 17 + 39 and you get 69.

Subtract my age 56 from 69 and you get 13.

Coincidence?

No superstition here!

Today is the 20th month of my blog!  My anniversary post is something different than the usual posts I write.

‘The Switch’

Google ‘Switch’ and you get the following definition –

a device for making and breaking the connection in an electric circuit.

Wikipedia has the following –

Switches are most efficient (i.e., painful and durable) if made of a strong but flexible type of wood, such as hazel (also used for a very severe birch) or hickory; as the use of their names for disciplinary implements

Oh yes, I remember those days – those switches

How do these definitions relate to today?  In absolutely no way!

‘The Switch’ was made early this morning – it had to be done – he was unprepared for today – something must be wrong.

That he is me and ‘The Switch’ relates to my posts, as I was unprepared; something must be wrong.

I originally planned to published a video post of me today.  To publish that post today, my intentions were to record yesterday, but that never happened.  There was a hospital visit yesterday followed by an errand that needed to take place prior to my surgery.  So, the day slipped by and I in my usual pain became irritable, tried and worn out.  Honestly, I had just enough energy to respond to comments yesterday before I went to bed for the night – this occurred about 6:00 PM.

‘The Switch’ took place this morning and this post originally planned for Saturday is published today.  A video post of me will now be scheduled for Saturday.

Changes were made to this post, but here some of the original words –

My plan is to post every day, because this is a personal goal of mine and I see no reason I will be unable to continue it.  So, my posts for next week will be scheduled and ready to publish my usual time of 8:45 AM CST.  As I did while on my cruise back in December, I plan to disable comments, because honestly, I will not be able to respond to them next week immediately after surgery.  I am being optimistic in my recovery and my hope is I will be able to start responding to comments by next Saturday.  With that said, I will make adjustments along the way if necessary.

Some of you have asked me about whether Gary will be updating you on my status for next week.  The answer is no, he will not.  Gary is a wonderful man as you know, but he is somewhat technology challenged.  It would not be safe for him to be in my WP account, as it might accidently be deleted – sorry Gary.

As soon as I am able, I will be back online to let you know I am fine – that is my promise to you.

I am confident I will get through this surgery and initial recovery next week without issues.  I will make extra efforts to do so and I have Gary with me as my motivator.

And for the weeks to follow my recovery will be assisted by you, because each one of you motivates me.

As usual, I appreciate each of you and I am fortunate to have you as friends.

Thanks you!
