From nationalgeographic.com article Superstitious Numbers Around the World

Today is Friday the 13th—a day thought to be unlucky because of the idea that number 12 is “complete” (think apostles, months of the year, zodiac signs) and 13 is just … odd. That’s the explanation given by Joe Nickell, a senior research fellow and paranormal investigator for Skeptical Inquirer magazine.

But in other countries, different numbers are thought to be just as unlucky. In case 13 makes you nervous, here are five other numbers to avoid.

4: In China, the pronunciation of the word for the number four is similar to that of the Chinese word for death. Many buildings in China skip a fourth floor, just as U.S. builders sometimes omit floor 13.

9: Just as the number four has a bad-luck soundalike in Chinese, 9 is feared in Japan because it sounds similar to the Japanese word for torture or suffering.

17: Some Italians are superstitious about Friday the 17th because rearranging the Roman numeral XVII can create the word “VIXI”—translated from Latin to mean “my life is over.”

39: The number 39 gets a bad rap in Afghanistan. An NPR report explains: “Many Afghans say that the number 39 translates into morda-gow, which literally means ‘dead cow’ but is also a well-known slang term for a procurer of prostitutes—a pimp.” So when Afghans see a car with number 39 on the license plate, they head the other way.

Add the unlucky numbers 4 + 9 + 17 + 39 and you get 69.

Subtract my age 56 from 69 and you get 13.

New Insurance – New Doctor

In last month’s post ‘Doctor’s Suggestion’, I wrote the following –

In my post ‘A Week’s Occurrence’, I wrote about an issue I was having with my body that I had some cause for concern.  This issue has continued just not to the extent that it did that particular week several months ago.  A couple of weeks ago I had my doctor’s visit for my physical.  Without going into a long boring story, I found out when I was at the doctor’s office, my health insurance had been cancelled unbeknownst to me.

In today’s post, I write the following –

This month I have new insurance and with that will come a new doctor.  This new insurance is much better than I previously had and I am very fortunate to have it.  With this new insurance I had to find a new doctor due to my previous doctor not accepting this plan.  This Thursday, I see my new doctor for the first time so that I may get a referral to go see an urologist.  I continue to have some issues and need to have a urology evaluation.

As you may remember in my post ‘Olivia wants to get physical‘, I prefer a male doctor; unfortunately I was unable to find another male doctor, so a female doctor it is.  Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against females being doctors, I just feel more comfortable with a male doctor looking at the male parts.  Oh well, all is good – I am sure this new doctor of mine will work out just great – after all, the sex of a doctor should not really matter.

So, this issue of mine has now been going on for a little over 4 months, with some days being better than others.  I will tell you I do have a little more information as a result of a recent hospital visit.  Without going into any details now about the reason for the hospital visit; there were some blood and urine lab tests that took place and a CT scan.  These tests did not tell the whole story but did provide some insight.  The urology evaluation will provide more information about my situation.

I still have some concerns; but decided a couple of weeks ago to not dwell on the situation.  There were some unexpected exciting events that took place in December I will share with you in future posts.  Also I enjoyed my Christmas very much and this last trip was a success in that the decision was made regarding our next home, in the next location of the next chapter of my partner’s and my life.

The concerns I may have now and the additional visits to doctors will not prevent me from planning the move that will take place very soon.

I will keep you posted!

Life is like a

We go to school to learn, to grow, to understand, to become, to expand our mind, to express our thoughts and to move forward.

We start school not knowing much at all, then as our minds expand with knowledge, so do our desires, our dreams and our abilities.

Is life like a school?

In life we learn, we grow, we understand, we become, we expand our minds, we express our thoughts and we move forward.

We start life not knowing much at all, then as our minds expand with knowledge, so do our desires, our dreams and our abilities.

Life is like many things other than a school.

What about life is like a highway?

What about life is like a game?

What about life is like a box of chocolates?

These things are related to learning; we learned in school, we had to learn to drive on that highway, we had to learn to play the game, and I guess you could learn to like chocolates.

What else can we relate life to?

Life is what you make it – life is meaningless – life is messy – life is not pickles and hairspray (really?) – life is not fair – life is just a bowl of cherries – life is just a fantasy – life is ruff – life is too short – life is but a dream – life is beautiful

I think life is what we make of it.  Whether it a boat, a camera, a bowl of cherries, a fantasy, a dream, a box of chocolates, a game, a highway or a school – life is what we make of it.

For me I view my life is like a school; I am here to learn something and then I will take the most difficult exam to see if I know those lessons that were given to me.  Will I make an ‘A’ on the exam?

Will I pass the grade and move forward to the next?  What do I have to do to make that ‘A’?  What if I fail?

In this school of life, I am learning, growing, understanding, becoming, expanding, expressing and moving forward.

This may sound pessimistic, but I have always thought that day I make an ‘A’ on my exam, will be the day I die.

The day I die, I will graduate the school of life and not knowing what is next; I will take with me all those lessons, those tests, those teachers, those classes, those failings and those passes.

I will take with me the knowledge that was provided for me in this life, and know I did my best to learn.

Then again, maybe life is like a rollercoaster or like a mirror or like a book or like a sailboat or like a mountain.

Maybe instead of thinking about that exam at the end of school, I should be thinking about the now.

Life is what we make of it – let us enjoy it while we are here – maybe life is like a highway?

Okay, 12 + 13 + 15 = 40

I decided I would write about something when I was 40 years old, this was in the year 2000!

I researched on what events occurred on 12/13/2000 and you will never guess what occurred that day!

From uselectionatlas.org –

I researched on what events occurred on 12/13/1974 and you will never guess what occurred that day!

From timeanddate.com –

Olivia wants to get physical

Olivia wants to get physical – more on that later.

I want to get physical with my doctor, oh wait let me rephrase that; I got physical with my doctor.  Wait, I intended to write, I got a physical from my doctor.

Yes, that is what I meant!

In my post ‘A Week’s Occurrence’, I wrote the following –

A couple of months ago I had an issue.  Without going into details, something was occurring with my body that was unusual and I had some cause for concern.  This occurrence started the day my son #3 married and lasted a week.  During this week I contacted my doctor who is busy and short on staff and therefore was unable to get in to see him.  I already had plans to schedule an appointment for my physical as I usually do this every couple of years.  I never see my doctor except for physicals because I am never sick and my physicals always result in being healthy with no issues.

Today’s post I write the following –

I had my physical yesterday and the usual process takes place.  I am weighed; and taken to a room.  I am asked the usual questions about medications, allergies, and anything different than when the last time I visited?  Then the clothes are taken off and this is where the doctor gets physical.  Ok, I have no issues stripping in front of my doctor.  I will say, my preference is a male doctor; me being a guy, and I am unsure if this is a guy thing or not, I don’t want a women doctor looking around everywhere.  I figure a male doctor knows more about male parts, right?

So the doctor is getting physical with me, checking my chest: deep breath in, deep breath out – and the same with the back.  Then the hands are pressing the abdominal area; he asks “Does this hurt?”   “No”, I respond, and another part is pressed; “Does this hurt?” “No” I respond.  “Stand up.” he asks, I respond and stand – here is the good part.  Time to check out the ‘parts’, you know the male ‘parts’.  He looks and feels his way around as though he wants to find something.  “Everything good?” I ask; he responds “Have you had any issues?”  I respond “Not with the male parts.”

Okay, now the time has arrived, every man’s dream – time to check the prostate – time to get physical!  Turn around, bend over – I will let you figure out how the prostate is examined.

Let’s just say the doctor responds with “Feels normal, no unusual enlargement.”  I respond “Great!”

In Olivia Newton-John’s song ‘Physical’, some lyrics have a whole new meaning –

Let’s get physical, physical

I wanna get physical

Let’s get into physical

Let me hear your body talk, your body talk

Let me hear your body talk

Today is the 6th month of my blog!  My anniversary post is something different than the usual posts I write.  What WILL next month’s anniversary post be about?

Conversations in my head

I talk with myself in my head quite often.  I guess maybe this is part of being human?

Sometimes a title comes in my mind about a post I want to write.  I usually write the title down then later will write a post, with some titles I know exactly what I want to write about.  Some titles I have no idea what to write and just start writing – and my writing will create the post.  With this title ‘Conversations in my head’, I had no idea where it would lead me to.  Sometimes I research my title simply by performing a search on Google using the specific title and the results help take me in the direction I want to go.  The Google search took place and I read articles about ‘the little voice in your head’, ‘inner speech’, ‘inner dialogue’, ‘imaginary conversations’, ‘head conversation’, ‘borderline personality disorder’, and so on.

Then the conversation in my head starts –

As I wrote in my first paragraph, sometimes a title comes in my mind about a post I want to write.  I usually write the title down then later will write a post, with some titles I know exactly what I want to write about.  Some titles I have no idea what to write and just start writing – and my writing will create the post – as it did with this post.

Really? Really!

When I started writing my blog posts, I really had no idea how to write or what to write about – I just knew I needed to write, really.

So me not being a writer I just started writing.  Along the way, I have had typos, you know the ones; no misspelled words because ‘Spellcheck’ or ‘Proofread Writing’ catches those for me.  But the grammar typos, such as using ‘to’ instead of ‘too’ or after one of my posts I published I used the word ‘medal’ instead of ‘metal’, you get the idea.  Not a good student in school and not wanting to learn about grammar and sentence structure, I just write the way I talk.  And I am okay with that, I feel my blog is telling a story of me not just with the stories themselves, but the way I write them, including the typos – which do drive me crazy when I see them after publish… but let’s move on.

I wrote a past post and used the word ‘really’ and questioned myself if I needed to use the word ‘really’ in my sentence.  I jotted down my question and moved on.  I decided to investigate what the word ‘really’ meant and am I using it correctly in my sentences.

merriam-webster.com has this definition –

1 a :  in reality :  actually <things as they really are> <there was nothing peculiar about her doing this, really — Peter Taylor>

b :  truly, unquestionably —used as an intensifier <a really beautiful day>

c :  very 2 <look really close> <he runs really fast>

2 —used to emphasize an assertion <you really should read Yeats> <really, you’re being ridiculous>

urbandictionary.com has this definition –

A statement of disbelief in a sarcastic manner. It`s like “seriously” but more obnoxious.

In response to a question that just shouldn’t be asked.<Slight Pause> Then said while cocking your head to the side a bit.

This word ‘really’ is really used quite a bit in journalism – News Highlights Please – (taken from today’s headlines)

2015-09-23_0736_001 2015-09-23_0736 2015-09-23_0735_001 2015-09-23_0735 2015-09-23_0734_001

Okay, I really think the word ‘really’, is most likely really overused and I really think my use of the word ‘really’ is really used correctly.  I really feel better now.  Really? Really!
